I found out Tuesday in one of my classes that John McCain was
coming to Young's Dairy Farm in Yellow Springs. I took my lil (in my sorority)
and we drove 30 minutes to stand outside for an hour waiting for John McCain to
arrive. After an hour of waiting in the cold, his bus finally arrived. The
campaign volunteers told everyone that there was no more room inside and we
would just get to see him walk into the dairy farm and then back out to get on
his bus and leave. Well I was not about to let that happen! So I put my sash on
and grabbed my lil's hand and after John McCain and his wife walked into the
dairy farm, my lil, myself and some others followed in right behind him! I
signed about 15 photos for others, a McCain official photographer asked to take
my picture with my crown and I gave her a signed photo of myself for Mr.
McCain (campaign volunteers told everyone not to give him ANYTHING to keep, so
she said that she would personal give it to him. I saw her come off of his bus
when he arrived so I know that picture would get to him!!) After signing photos
and getting pictures with fans, I finally got to meet John McCain. I was
standing in a line where he walked through to leave and he spotted my crown and
said, 'Oh, Miss Portsmouth?!' I answered, 'Yes, I am Katie Camp and I would love
a picture with you!' He said, 'I am honored that Miss Portsmouth wants a picture
with me!' Just as he turned away I said to his wife that I loved her Navy pin
and that my boyfriend is a naval aviator. His wife said, 'Our son is in the
Navy.' John McCain turned around and said, 'Tell him thank you for serving our
country!' After that I was so excited I was shaking.
As soon as my lil and I walked outside I was bombarded by random people who in
some crazy way were linked to Portsmouth and wanted a picture of me. Just as I
thought I was going to be able to go to the car and maybe regain feeling in my
toes, a local TV station reporter ran me down and wanted me to give my thoughts
on John McCain's visit. I have to say it was not my best interview but it was
around 14 degrees, the snow was blowing in my face, I could not feel my toes let
a long my feet and my crown was frozen to my hand! But it was all worth it and I
would not have changed one min of the day.
I hope you enjoy the pictures from my day!
